Shadowhunters Recap - "Of Men and Angels" (S01E06)

Magnus is working feverishly on a potion to save Luke, but he is missing ingredients. He asks Simon or Jace to go get them. They both insist on going and being the hero for Clary. Magnus asks Jace to send Alec over as he will be able to help. Jace admits they still haven't talked. Both guys go, and Clary is worried. She sits with Luke and tries to help Magnus with the potion.

Alec is at The Institute when his father and younger brother Max arrive. He and Izzy are delighted to see their brother. Alec gets a call from Jace asking him to go see Magnus and to help with Luke. Alec's not so sure he wants too. He talks with his mother and is concerned as he can tell she is upset about something that happened in Idris. They have a talk and Alec agrees to do whatever he can to help.

Jace and Simon argue. Jace tells Simon that he's only going to ever be Clary's friend and that is it. Jace makes it clear that he wants Clary. Simon gets angry and they begin to fight. Simon pulls a blade on Jace and Jace is shocked. Simon puts it away and apologizes for losing it. Jace asks what happened with the vampires and Simon won't talk about it. Jace is becoming concerned.

Luke isn't doing any better and is dreaming of Jocelyn. She tells him that Clary has to know the truth. Luke makes Magnus promise to tell her if he doesn't make it. Magnus does and then knocks him out with magic. Magnus encourages Clary to draw again. She wants to know what Luke meant, so Magnus tells her. Jocelyn and Luke were Circle members with Valentine and they believed in his message. Jocelyn married Valentine and Luke fought along side him. However, Valentine started to lose it and wanted to kill all downworlders because they are part demon so he began slaughtering them and making excuses to the Clave. Jocelyn and Luke didn't agree with this. Valentine eventually got the Mortal Cup so that he could make more shadowhunters, but Luke tried to stop him. He nearly killed Luke until Jocelyn intervened and she took off with the cup.

Clary can't believe Luke and her mother were involved in something so terrible, but Magnus insists Jocelyn only stayed to protect other shadowhunters. Clary is shocked about their involvement with The Circle.

Izzy's father brings her a present from Idris, a cookbook. She makes a joke and he remarks that this was always his favorite part of traveling, seeing her face when he gave her his gift. She wants to know what's going on with her mother and he explains that the Lightwood name has been tarnished thanks to all of their unauthorized missions and now they're trying to rebuild the family honor. Izzy insists she can help, she just needs to talk to her mother. She confronts Maryse who tells her that she has tarnished her own reputation so they have to marry Alec to a family who is still honorable. Izzy's involvement with the Seelies won't do them any good in finding her a suitable mate, so she will have to speak to the Clave on behalf of the Seelies. Izzy is furious after being degraded by her mother.

Izzy and Alec argue about what is going to happen and Alec has had enough. He leaves to go see Magnus. Meanwhile, Jace and Simon reach their destination and Jace forces Simon to stay outside. While he's alone he sees Camille. When he approaches "her" he sees his own corpse on the ground. Jace comes running out yelling that they have to go. He's being chased by a creature, so he grabs Simon and runs.

Alec arrives as Magnus is trying to save Luke using his magic. He's running out of power, so he asks Alec to help him. Alec takes his hand and allows him to borrow his power. Magnus channels Alec's power as Jace and Simon run in. Clary grabs the ingredients and finishes the potion, feeding it to Luke. Magnus nearly collapses from weakness and Alec holds him. Alec is cleaning up the apartment when Clary thanks him for coming and for helping. She hopes he and Jace are ok, and Alec remarks that he didn't come for Jace. Clary tells him she's glad he did it for himself. Jace walks in and the boys hug. Clary thanks Jace for always having her back and the two share a tender moment until Simon walks in on them to let Clary know that Luke is asking for her. Clary hugs Simon and thanks him before going to see Luke.

Luke tells Clary more about what happened and how he and Jocelyn fell in love which is what drove Valentine over the edge. He makes it clear, that although they were in love, they never slept together. Valentine was sure they were having an affair and he was determined to win her back. Valentine began injecting himself with blood from downworlders and according to Luke, he was never the same after that. Valentine asked Luke to back him up on a mission as they were Parabatai, but when they went to attack, Valentine locked him in a room with werewolves which is how Luke became one. Valentine betrayed their Parabatai bond. When he tried to stop Valentine from taking the Mortal Cup, Valentine told him it would have been more honorable for him to kill himself.

Alec works on cleaning the couch and Magnus remarks that magic can take care of that. Alec points out that he's already exerted himself enough for the day. Magnus asks him to have a drink with him as he hands Alec a glass. Alec gets a call from The Institute and says he has to go. Magnus asks him to have one more drink and then decide if he really wants to go. Alec drinks with him. Meanwhile, Simon gets ready to leave, and Jace tries to stop him. Simon leaves and Jace is clearly concerned about him although he won't admit it.

Clary shows Luke the box and asks who it belongs too. Luke doesn't want to tell her, but she insists. He says it belonged to her brother Jonathan Christopher. He was her older brother, but Valentine killed him. He burned him in the family manor, when he faked his own death. Clary is shocked and can't believe that he was such a horrible person. She places the box on her sketch pad, and she's upset. The box disappears into the page and appears as a sketch. Clary and Luke can't believe it. He says this gift is rare and Clary asks if it can be hereditary. Luke says it's possible and Clary says she knows where her mother hid the Mortal Cup.
